Be True to Yourself: a yoga oxymoron?
December 7, 2009Stephen Thomas No Comments »Part of yoga is about learning about yourself and finding your place in your own spirit, mind, and body. The problem is, so many times in order to do the posture perfectly, in order to be just like our favorite yoga star, we lose our own uniqueness. You need to be true to yourself!
I teach Kripalu yoga and one of the things I like most about it is that in Kripalu, we don’t insist that you look like everyone else, as some styles do. I often say to do the posture to the best of your ability. What one person may be able to do, another may not. Our bodies are different and our abilities are different.
Now this should not be taken as an excuse to be sloppy in our postures or to not try. It does mean that we can be who we are in class or in our practice and should, in fact, learn to do our best in each situation, on and off the mat.
