How to Have Courage
September 11, 2009Stephen Thomas No Comments »Well, here we are at the end of another week. What’s gone on with me? Well I learned that even people with the big names and the big dollars have come from places where they were unsure of themselves and backed away when they should have gone forward. I learned that we are all human and have a human experience. It takes courage to go forward sometimes.
Courage is defined as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.” There are things I want to do and, frankly, some of them take a little courage on my part to see them through. Being brave for me is more a sense of stubbornness than anything noble.
Setting goals and not allowing myself to be dissuaded may not seem like courage, but to do some of the things that I need to do requires me to get some back-bone and leave behind the wish-bone.
What do you need courage for? Why do you need to be brave? It comes to us all; the time to stand and be counted. What goals would you like to see reached?
If you can’t answer that question, then I suggest you give it some thought. Dream a little! What would you like to do? It can be personal, professional, relational, whatever. Set that goal and then decide that you will reach it, no matter what.
When you get that do or die attitude, you find yourself overcoming obstacles that you never thought you could. Other people will look at you and say, “I can’t believe how brave you were! I can’t believe how courageous!”
You’ll know. You’ll know you were just being stubborn and not letting go of that goal. But then you’ll know; that’s what being courageous is.
