Life is the Ocean
February 27, 2009Stephen Thomas No Comments »When I was a boy, growing up in Southern California, I used to go to the beach quite often. I can remember standing on the shore and watching the waves roll in. Most times they were small, three or four feet high. Sometimes they were bigger and occasionally, they were huge. I had a sense of awe about the ocean. I still do. It is big and fearsome and something I can’t control, but I love it anyway. I would stand there and look at it and then I would run as fast as I could into the water until I couldn’t run anymore. I knew how big the waves were, I knew the strength of the water, but I would plunge in anyway.
Life lived to its fullest is this way. You watch for a while, gauging the strength and the height and then you plunge in. You run as fast as you can and plow into the first breaker that comes. The joy of being one with this thing called life is more than you can bear. You feel like shouting out your freedom as you dive under the waves that threaten to crush you and come up on the other side feeling victorious! Life is meant to be lived this way. Won’t you join me for a swim?
